Our Story
Umbrian Olive cultivation is among the most ancient Italian traditions, dating as far back as the first people to cultivate this fruitful tree, the Etruscans. Extra-virgin Olive Oil has become one of the primary treasures of the Umbrian territory such that the olive grove is the typical characteristic everywhere.
Our name "Marfuga" comes from our privileged location at the foot of the captivating Marfuga Hills, covered by the most beautiful and fertile olive groves of the Spoleto Valley. The farming tradition in our family goes way back, as evidenced in transport documents from the railway, possessing the Pontifical state seal for sales of Olive oil, produced from our own olive groves, dating as far back as 1817.
Documents, conserved in the family archives, show that since the early 1900's my great grandfather Domenico was already transporting our precious nectar in glass "Damigiane" to families in northern Italy.
However, thanks to the will power and tenacity of my father Ettore, especially during the agricultural crisis of the 1950's-1960's, and while simultaneously working as a bank clerk, this persistence and sacrifice would eventually lead to the purchase of new olive groves and the realization in 1976 of a new factory. The key to the incredible success that our products have obtained in many well known gourmet restaurants and stores, throughout Europe and the United States, was my father's main goal to produce a typical, impeccable extra virgin olive oil and his success in transmitting that same passion filled skill to me.
The "passe partout" high quality standard of our factory is the key to our successful production, as demonstrated in 1999 by our selection among the top 5 best olive oils in the Umbrian region by the "Unioncamere" as well as in 2003 by our first place finish in the top category for Best Organic DOP Extra-Virgin Olive Oil at the National "Ercole Olivario" competition and our third place finish in the top category for Extra-Virgin Olive Oil DOP in Umbria at the "Colli Assisi Spoleto" competition.
Last year, after the success of the gastronomic and rural tourist business, my wife, Federica, and I decided to build our Holiday Cottage with swimming pool. It has five furnished suites in a typically Umbrian homestead. We can now offer shelter to people who would like to attend oil production and tasting. We recommend the months of October, November and December, when the oil-press activity is at its highest.
